Google and Asus have teamed up to bring us the newest and hottest selling android tablet on the market. But with so many tablets on the market these days how does it stack up?

There have been many reviews focused on why people should not buy the nexus 7 but in most cases, these have been by people who favour a particular brand and are trying to run down the new competition

In reality, the Nexus 7 has more to offer on a dollar for dollar value than any other tablet in it’s class. Those who are serious about buying a tablet in the 7” range should not be comparing it to an iPad. If you really think you will get the same quality and features for less than half the price you are kidding yourself. Those looking for something in the 7” range around the $199 mark are looking for convenience, portability and something that is easy to use. The Nexus 7 ticks all the boxes when it comes to what people are after.

Whilst there are some features that many wish were included, all tablets in this class have something different “missing” and at least at this point, you need to determine the best buy for the under $200 category. Compared to other tablets in this class, the nexus 7 really is a fine piece of technology, especially when compared to the kindle fire which was the leader in this class.

Let’s take a look at a look at what you will get when you purchase a Nexus 7

  • Nexus 7 weighs 340g compared to the weight of the Kindle Fire which sits at 567g, a remarkable difference. The Nexus 7 is the clear winner here, after all, tablets are made to be portable. You wouldn’t want to be holding the Kindle in your hand for long periods of time!

  • The Kindle Fire is making use of Android 4.0, whereas the Nexus 7 is making use of the brand new Android 4.1, otherwise known as Jelly Bean. Whilst it is only an incremental update, it really does make all of the difference. The Nexus 7 is just so much smoother, and it manages to pack in a lot more features than the Kindle Fire, and therefore the Nexus 7 one again wins here.

  • Next up is the freedom of the software, and this is where the Kindle Fire HD really falls on its face. You simply cannot login to Google’s servers, which means a great deal of functionality of the device is taken away straight away, you are literally tied into the Amazon ‘ecosystem’, and that isn’t as substantial as the Google System. You are going to be missing out on hundreds of thousands of applications that you can download. It really makes no sense to opt for this device really. On top of that, you are force fed advertisements on the Kindle Fire HD, they can be removed if you pay Amazon, but, a few adverts will always remain. Once again, the Nexus 7 wins.

  • The Nexus 7 also has a much better chip than the Kindle Fire. It boasts a 1.3 GHz Quad Core compared to the 1.2GHz Dual Core on the Kindle Fire. There is a startling difference between the two, everything runs so much smoother on the Nexus, and you really won’t believe the quality of gaming that you are able to rip out of it. Once again, the Nexus takes the title, and it does it by a lot!

The only downside to the Nexus is that it doesn’t have a Micro-HDMI port whereas the Kindle Fire HD does. I don’t really see this as too much of a problem, it isn’t something that the majority of people are actually going to use, and once again, with the benefits of owning an Nexus 7, I really do think this is something that can be forgiven.
